Nice KazooJul 17, 2010 Bought this for my three year old who loves it, have to stop him from poking the vibrating piece though. The blue holes are not drilled out they are just for looks. The wood seems to be holding up, told him not to bite it and it hasn't been an issue, smells like Popsicle sticks or tongue depressors. Like other reviewers noted the sound is not that of a regular metal or plastic kazoo it is actually a lot less annoying ;)
Works wellJul 05, 2010 Good construction and I'm happy it's wood my toddler is putting in her mouth, and not plastic.

Just like I remember a kazooFeb 13, 2010 I was looking for a small, not expensive and fun stocking stuffer for Christmas because I remember how much fun these were when I was a kid. We played with them so much our parents said "go outside"! My grandkids don't get to enjoy the simple fun things we did as kids who could go play all day without tha kind of supervision we need today. Fun, easy, durable and a beginning to the music we can make ourselves! I'll get more for Birthdays, and other "non-special" occasions for other family and friends who have kids.

a great little instrumentOct 14, 2009 When my toddler started chewing the paint off a metal kazoo I knew we needed an alternative. Like all other Melissa & Doug toys we've tried, their kazoo seems both well-conceived and durably constructed. It is fabricated from two pieces of wood the length of the instrument solidly glued together with a hole bored for the membrane to vibrate. The soft wood does accumulate teeth marks from my little chewer. However, since the wood is unfinished I am not concerned about him ingesting anything other than cellulose.
It is quieter than a standard metal kazoo. In the hands of a little musician, that can be a good thing.

Fun KazooJan 29, 2009 I have a collection of Kazoos and "onion" or "eunuch" flutes made from many materials, MANY of them wood. I purchased several of these to engage children at Renaissance Faire in the fine art of making music. They are very inexpensive so I could give one to each child to keep.
The trick with a kazoo is to use it properly. you need to hum and blow lightly into the mouthpiece, and NOT just blow. In fact, I teach kids to put their lips to the instrument and try to talk without removing their lips. This works amazingly, and induces much giggling!
As for the sterilization issue, I just wipe off my wood kazoos with lemon juice, just like I do my wooden cutting boards!
